The two-alarm blaze began in the basement around 10:30 p.m. and quickly blew through the roof, responders said.

Trash stacked in the 1½-story home -- set back behind another house on Cedar Street -- blocked access and forced firefighters to attack the flames from outside, they said.

No injuries were reported, although a cat was treated for smoke inhalation before being taken to Oradell Animal Hospital.

Responders included Garfield police and firefighters from Elmwood Park, Lodi, Saddle Brook and Wallington.
